Equipment Needed to Clean Car Dealership Cars Considered

Now you are wondering what type of equipment you are going to need to wash quickly and efficiently right? Well, guess what, you are not alone. Not long ago, I was asked this question;

[Do I need to buy a] Hot water [pressure washer] or can we get by with cold water?

This is a very good question, and of course the answer is; it depends.

If you are just washing car lots, it’s actually better to use cold water, because if you are using reverse osmosis or de-ionized water, and then you run that water through the coils, that very clean water will have a corrosive effect on the coils as the water now looks for molecules to attach too.

If you’re going to use hot water for cleaning car lots and you’re going to use ultra clean water, you must get stainless steel coils, and they are quite expensive and you’ll need schedule 80 coils. This way you can heat the water, without collecting iron oxides from the inside of the coils which will re-pollute your water with heavy metals in a significant parts per million, enough to water spot the cars.

If you’re just cleaning car lots you can get away with a 5 hp Honda pressure washer with a small general or cat pump. It is better not to buy the cheapo brands at Home Depot that are made for individuals who might wash their own car at home, you need something more industrial and we found that Honda pressure washers last forever and are literally bulletproof, even if you unfortunately forget to change the oil.

If you’re going to use a hot-water pressure washer on car lots, and I am assuming you will be doing car lots because this was our previous set of questions, then I recommend a Landa, Hydrotek, or equivalent pressure washers skid unit, again with the stainless schedule 80 coils, 2500 PSI, and 4.5 gallons per minute. This won’t be cheap, you could easily approach $7,500.00

Indeed, I think what you will find is most people who do car lot washing, and small car fleets, or perhaps post office jeeps, or vans will be using cold water. One large company out of New Jersey called Fleetwash, which I believe uses cold water to clean everything but large over the road trucks or LTL carriers. They even use cold water to clean beer tracks, Frito-Lay trucks, bread trucks, and beverage trucks such as 7-up. Please consider all this.
